Re: Acne!
As-Salaamu 'Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaah,
Have any of you heard of Laser Acne Treatment? It targets bacteria that cause acne. It's almost like the Laser Hair Removel but its for Acne. I wonder if anyone has gotten that done. I hear it works and greatly improves your skin from the scars and such as well.
Was-Salaamu 'Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaah.

I dunno, I guess it's fun to say .
I found that Pakistan's water was the cure for me. Seriously . I still get the occasional pimple or two (3, right now), but I don't mind. I like being imperfect .

Re: Acne!
There's a course of tablets with some pretty heavy side effects that a friend is taking at the moment...it's not exactly making her a happy bunny but they do work. The course lasts about a few months

The only downside is the monthly labs and severe dryness and that just means you load up on aveeno and beeswax lip treatment.
I tried minocycline, tazorac (helped but came back), and every other anti-acne stuff you can think of.. nothing was as good as accutane.

There are MANY reports on the often dangerous side effects of ACCUTANE....I suggest people looking it up before taking Accutane

I actually attempted when I was on it. When you take the drug, you have to have blood tests at least once a month to see if your body is able to handle it.
2) It's extremely expensive. I think a year's supply is more than $1000
3) It's basically illegal now because it's so dangerous.

It's not "basically illegal," and there has never been any conclusive evidence that Accutane causes depression or suicide. You have to factor in the whole picture here before you damn the drug. Often times, kids with severe cystic acne are already teased and ostracized, so perhaps they're depressed from before. Also when you're on Accutane, during the course of the treatment, you break out like you've never done before. It's awful, but your skin starts to clear up AFTER you finish the treatment cycle. Some kids may get discouraged during that time, leading to depression. Yes, there are many health issues involved with Accutane, but I took it and it was the best thing I ever did for my skin. After six months, I finally had clear skin for the first time since I was 11 and it was worth all the trouble. Many people have trouble tolerating it and it may affect their liver function temporarily, but you have to find a doctor who is willing to work with you and give you the lowest dose possible. Also, based on what I've seen, it works better on kids over 18, when they're fully mature. A lot of younger friends had to be taken off of it because it affected their liver function, but a few went back on it several years later and had much better results. In the end, follow what your doctor says.

Re: Acne!
Nidoboy, how bad was your experience with it? Did your labs go all wack or was it just not effective?
Alhumdulillah, my experience has been great so far. I'm thinking of taking it for one more month and discontinuing it. My doc told me its upto me. I think 3 months is good enough.
I agree with raatkiraani. I didn't see that earlier post.
The only reason why accutane is heavily regulated is because it can cause severe fetal deformities if females become pregnant. Thats why you have to get pregnancy tests done even if you remain abstinent. The suicidal ideations can be explained by the age group that's taking it and the social stigma attached to acne prone skin especially in teens. Mood swings can be explained similarly.
You have to remember a drug company has to report all side effects reported during clinical trials and if even a minute percent had suicidal tendencies by law the patients have to be informed.

Re: Acne!
Great posts by raatkirani and rxrlm. Accutane is a potentially very toxic drug that can and does have strong side effects. However, there are very few things in medicine which don't have risks, and as in any and all medical decisions risks should be known but then weighed against the benefits of the treatment. I would not recommend that anyone resort to Accutane before having at least *tried* milder forms of therapy, but if nothing else works taking Accutane with careful followup with a dermatologist (the only people that can legally prescribe it in the U.S.) can work wonders. Remember also that the risks are far more serious for women than for men due to the risk of affecting pregnancy.

It worked while I was on it but as soon as I stopped my acne came right back. The side effects were severe, I think some have become permanent to some degree (its been 4 years since I last took accutane).

I decided to start using Benzoyl Peroxide again.....I didnt want to because its a harsh ingredient but Its the only thing that works fast and efficiently...I only use it in cleanser form though....the creams are too much for me-I end up red as a tomato

I'm sorry to hear that.. thats scary.
I think the reason it can come back more easily in males is because their normal testosterone alone can cause acne thats why males have much severe acne as compared to females. Unfortunately, what makes a man a man, causes acne..whereas, females have fluctuating hormones depending on the time of the month and may have messed up cycles. And if their hormonal problems are solved, their acne should clear up too.
Accutane doesn't effect your hormones.. it just sucks up the sebaceous glands and dries everything up.
