Buying older cars
WHat have been your experiences in buying older cars, ie cars fromt eh mid to late 90's?
I've seen a few Saturns and such that are $1500-$2000 which is my price range. Should I go for somehting liek this?

Hodja picked up a bunch of grapes, cut it up into pieces and gave each child a piece.
"You have so much, but you gave us so little," the children complained.
"There is no difference whether you have a basketful or a small piece. They all taste the same," Hodja remarked.

A few months ago I bought a Honda Accord 1987. It runs aight. But then the 1987 Accords have a reputation for running forever.

Re: Buying older cars
before buying, check the vin number, you can usually go on craigslist and someone will do it for like 2-5 bucks,
also take it to a mechanic right before you have almost said yes, to check everything out!

Definitely get an inspection done - you don't want to be stuck with a car that costs more in repairs than what you paid for it. Where are you looking for cars?

Re: Buying older cars
I think something like an Accord or Camry would be a good option for you. Good luck!

At many laundromats, there are also free community ad papers that advertise privately owned stuff for sale. They have names like "penny press" or "thrify nickel" and so forth. You can also check those. You can also check the classifieds in your local newspaper. The advantage to print is that a lot of old folks advertise there, so you can get some grandpa's car which has been maintained beautifully.

in my opinion, older saturns (and newer saturns for that matter; haha) are not worth the money. particularly older ones. if you want a decent car from the mid 90s that will still run for a while, go with a nissan/camry/accord. my abu is the type who sees the "for sale" sign on a car and pursues that, but then again he knows cars and also knows when people are lying about their cars ("we only used it for highway driving" might = our college aged son is done maiming the vehicle now). but yeah, if i were you and i was looking for an older car that still has some oomph left it in, i'd definitely go for a foreign make. they last forever.

it helps if you have somebody who knows cars go with you.
