Not helps, it's really a necessity. If you don't have a mechanic friend with you to go over the car, you could end up paying a lot of money for a car which is a pile of crap. My dad used to go to auctions and buy cars for $500 or less, which had one serious problem but otherwise were fine. Of course, he's a mechanic so he can fix it. One time my Aunt bought a car at auction in her own, without my dad or grandpa, and the car had sooo many things wrong with it. She bought it because it looked "pretty".

Re: Buying older cars
Revert, I bought a 97 prelude from craigslist...from experience I'm telling you, it is a MUST to have the car inspected by a mechanic prior to purchasing it.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll definately take heed.

"There is no difference whether you have a basketful or a small piece. They all taste the same," Hodja remarked.

Make sure if you settle on say, a late '90s Prelude, you don't go getting an automatic.

Damn girl so you're putting premium in that badboy? I was thinking about going with a prelude because I love the way the sh drives but at $4.20/gal and rising for regular I couldn't justify feeding that H22 what it needs to stay happy.
Revert
Definitely go with a Honda or Toyota. A great Honda can be had for $2000>. Those little 4 cylinder engines go forever. Don't get scared away by cars with higher mileage -- when it comes to Hondas I take that as a sign that nothing is wrong with the car.
Having the mechanic check the car out is a must. Craigslist is good, but I think autotrader is better.
Good luck bro.

Any 96 Honda and up stay away from the automatic transmissions, especially on the V6s. Even up to the newest models after the powertrain warranty is up you're SOL.

I'd say do it. Gas is expensive, yeah, but a tank of premium is only like $3 more than a tank of regular. If it's the car you really want, it's easily worth it.

Picked up an integra instead. Got a better deal on it and it turns out I'll have more work to do w/ the exterior and under the hood. Ended up being a better project car.

Re: Buying older cars
Alright guys, I will need to buy a used car very soon. Ideally I just want something that is good on gas, has a/c, and will not fall apart on me. I don't want to spend more than 5k on it. I currently have a corrolla in mind. Any other suggestions?
Also, any ideas on how much car insurance could cost me in Florida?

Re: Buying older cars
corrolla or civic bro! as far as insurance, your at the age that it might cost a bit more than normal, but shop around at a few different insurance's to get the lowest possible.
if you still in school and have decent/ to good grades i think there is a discount for that also.

Re: Buying older cars
agree with yousuf. i've had experiences with honda civics and nissan sentras, and i'll tell you definitely avoid the sentras. too many problems from what i've seen in the two that we've had. you can easily get a civic under 5k. mine is a 95 sedan with 132k miles that would go for $2000. I love the handling, and after all these years, it still gives 27mpg hwy/23 mpg city. nothing major has broken over the 7 years i've had it even though I've abused it plenty (no repairs >$350 dollars).

Re: Buying older cars
Thanks, yousuf and RS. Another thing I was wondering about was mileage. How much mileage should I be looking for as a limit? What would be a 'good' number to be below in terms of miles travelled by the car?

from what I can gather 100K isn't a deal breaker for a Honda or a Toyota..those cars can go well into 200K
My lease fell through so i'm in the same boat as you now bro.

Leasing isn't an option for everyone..for example you need an established credit history to lease, plus with a lease you are still paying interest under the guise of a finance charge.
PLus unless you want a brand new car every few years you are throwing money down the drain. Leases also suck as after the lease is over they can hit you for damage to the car (even if its minor).
Leases blow unless you are in a tight spot(like I am)

i suppose. lol
i was looking to buy a used car, adn i figured that the money im gunna be spending on repairs every month isnt worth it and id rather lease. so thats what i did. plus my mom is a freelancer so she can write off a good portion of the lease as business expense.
