Firstly what's you're budget? Bicycle laws are relatively the same in all 50 states.

p.s I don't bug people, I only entertain them. Of course some people get some perverse pleasure from being bugged

$300-$1000 is pretty decent actually. There are three categories that make good commuters. First one are Hybrids, second one are Cyclocross, and the third type are touring bikes.

My personal favorite are Cyclocross (balanced with comfort and speed), fast on and off roads. Touring are more for comfort and long distance. Hybrids are also for comfort and take a reasonable amount of carry-ons. The only downfall for Hybrids are that they are typically flat handlebar bikes which mean less hand positions.

Here are a few brands to google:

Kona
Trek
Surly

You can check Sheldon Brown-Bicycle Technical Information for everything about bikes

Use the friggin' sidewalk, man. Why do you all have to bike on the road?

We're all going like 60 km an hour at least and there you are, doing 3 and being a nuisance on top of it. And you reach your destination all sweaty and whatnot... is it worth it?

It it's about being healthy: just work out in your spare time like the rest of us.
If it's about saving money: stop being cheap.
If it's about saving the environment: nobody cares.

Bikes are for parks or nature trails. Or the sidewalk. Please.

Cuz it's against the law in all 50 states of the US and riding in the sidewalk is twice as dangerous as riding in the street...

I usually travel from 18-30 MPH. Yep it's definitely worth it. Plus I feel energetic after I bike to work vs. being fustrated with traffic jams and what not and sluggish all day.
