Re: Freeway Speed Limits
They should reduce it to 45mph

Those who love high speeds should get into a big accident to see what it feels like

Re: Freeway Speed Limits
I'm going to be the old lady in the bunch and say they need to be reduced slightly. First of all, everyone is going at least 10-15 mph higher than the limit to begin with, and a reduction will buffer that. Second of all, where I live (CA), there are too many a-holes in the road who cut people off and worse, tailgate within an inch of their lives. If you're going 80, you need to keep an eight car distance in order to be able to react in time if something happens or gets in the way. Most people have no basic concept of physics that the heavier and faster something is, the longer length it needs to stop. Also, when you are going faster, as Bruinrab has stated, and you hit something, it will be nasty to say the least. When people compare statistics of years with lower speed limits with years of higher ones, they neglect to take into account that cars have become safer and seat belt laws more stringent. That would definitely have some effect on the lower death rates in crashes stats that are so quick to be thrown around after speed limits are raised.

Re: Freeway Speed Limits
I wish the speed limit on highways was higher... at least 80 mph on highways that are currently set at 70 mph.
However that can't and won't ever happen because there's too many people on the road who really have no idea how to drive. They would have to make the drivers license exam more stringent, and they won't do that because in most of the country people rely on driving to get to work etc.
I think even for the autobahn, you need to have a special license to drive on it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Freeway Speed Limits
I think we should have a separate highway without a speed limit for those nut jobs who like to go unreasonably fast. Survival of the fittest donchaknow

Actually, that wouldn't be so bad after all as it would make the slow drivers shut up and force them to be in the far right lanes.

Re: Freeway Speed Limits
In England, the speed limit on motorways (which is what we call freeways/highways) is 70mph. But most people drive about 60ish in the left lane (which is the slow lane) and about 70-80 in the second lane, and the third lane is like 80+.
I heard, but don't know if it's true or just an urban myth, that the police cameras can't clock you until you're doing a certain number above the speed limit. And I've been told that its 10% +3. So if the limit was 70mph then it would be (10% of 70) 7 + 3 which equals 10. So you'd have to be doing 81mph before the police cameras can clock you. So, one might say that you could normally drive 75-80 if it's known that a stretch of road has cameras on it.

Re: Freeway Speed Limits
For all those who dislike slow drivers - DON"T GO TO OREGON. By the end of 24 hours there, I was ready to pull out my hair. The speed limit is 55mph, and people follow it to a tee.
It's like they think their cars will evaporate if they reach 60mph.
Edit: apparently this is a Portland phenomenon.

Re: Freeway Speed Limits
Asalaamualaikum,
In I-495, 395, and 95 near the MD/DC/VA area is 55mph! That is way to slow. Now that they have the new $1000 fine for speeders that live in VA and speed in VA, its especially annoying! I just wish one of these days that the people that made that law get caught speeding and get fined $1000 and it keeps happening to them over and over.
Asalaamualaikum,
-Zahid
