Look how nice and normal he looked before he went crazy with the surgeries.

Michael Jackson, who said in a television interview with Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday that his light skin was the result of a disorder, not intentional bleaching, is suffering from vitiligo, a rare disease that discolors the face and body, his dermatologist said yesterday.

Although Mr. Jackson did not disclose the name of the disorder in the interview, his dermatologist in Beverly Hills, Calif., confirmed that the pop singer suffered from the little understood disease that affects 1 to 2 percent of the world's population.

"Mr. Jackson has requested that I make this statement," The Associated Press quoted the dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, as saying. "It is not contagious and is a result of the loss of pigment producing cells of the skin."

Dermatologists said vitiligo (pronounced vit-ill-EYE-go) can cause a person to lose pigment in patches or all over the body, making a black person's skin turn white, for example, or giving a white person patches of albino-like skin. Although there is no way to prevent or stop the progress of vitiligo, the disease can be treated by repigmenting the skin, which is often at least partly successful, or by killing all the skin's pigment cells, making the skin uniformly light. Origins of Disorder

The loss of pigmentation often begins in childhood, although it can occur at any age, and it usually proceeds slowly, with a few white spots becoming noticeable on the face, knuckles or knees. The spots are symmetrical -- whatever happens on one side of the body happens on the other. The disease can stop with just a few white spots, or the light areas can spread. In severe cases, all the pigment cells are lost. The depigmented areas often include white circles around the eyes and mouth.

The discoloration can cause severe distress. "It really is a terrible problem," said Dr. Barbara Gilchrest, who is chairwoman of the dermatology department at the Boston University School of Medicine. She said she felt bad for Mr. Jackson, if he has the disease, because he had to endure "a lot of snide remarks and innuendos about his getting whiter and whiter."

Allen Locklin, director of the National Vitiligo Foundation in Tyler, Tex., said patients with the disease often become very self-conscious and depressed. Mr. Locklin, who is 68, said he saw the first vitiligo spots on his own hands and shins when he was a teen-ager but did not know what they were. The spots did not spread until he reached his 30's, when they rapidly grew and his face developed white patches. "I became a recluse," he said. "It was just devastating." Ancient Disease

Vitiligo is an ancient disease, Dr. Gilchrest said, adding that many of the lepers in the Bible probably actually had it.

But researchers still do not know its cause. One hypothesis is that the body's immune system turns on melanocytes, the skin's pigment cells, destroying them. But Dr. James J. Nordlund, chairman of the department of dermatology at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, said his data indicated that it is caused by a gene that disrupts the movement and storage of proteins within the pigment cells.

Even if the disease does have a hereditary component, it may appear in such mild form in some individuals that it goes unnoticed.

Repigmenting uses a drug that seems to make pigmented cells move from hair follicles into white areas of the skin. Patients take a drug, 8-methoxypsoralen, and then sit in special tanning booths where they are exposed to ultraviolet A radiation. The ultraviolet light activates the drug and, for reasons that are still a mystery, repigmentation usually begins.

Dr. Nordlund said that as many as 65 percent of patients can regain their pigment with the treatment.

But the treatment is slow, expensive, and has side effects. It takes a year or more of treatments twice a week, costing as much as $5,800 a year, said Amy Jones of the National Vitiligo Foundation. She said many insurance companies will not pay for treatment because they consider it cosmetic. About 30 percent of patients become nauseated and dizzy from the drug.

The American Skin Association says a new drug, 5-methoxypsoralen, which is sold in Europe and under review by the Food and Drug Administration, does not cause nausea and dizziness and can be used with natural sunlight.

An alternative to repigmenting the skin is denuding it of pigment altogether with drugs that kill pigment cells. Or, as Mr. Jackson said he does, patients can sometimes use makeup to give the illusion of an even skin tone.

Ya, I saw a documentary on youtube about Jackson's vitiligo. I've heard that for awhile but I was like "I've never seen pictures of his blotchiness" but ya, I guess they are out there. The youtube doc had an interview with him discussing it with Oprah and his makeup artist was talking about how she hides it. I guess no celebrity wants to be caught looking like that (can't blame them, too much pressure). They tried to hide it in the beginning by evening this skin tone out but after awhile, the word just got out.

I feel sorry for Michael. All these people are making fun of him saying that he wanted to be white, yet he had to change his skin color because of this disease.

Well, he operated a million times on his nose, which one could argue was to have a white nose.

I was also very sad to hear of his passing. I remember being young and hearing all his music. Michael Jackson & Madonna defined my childhood & what a great childhood it was!

My favorite MJ song is "Remember The Time"
