Book Club!
AsSalamu' Alaykum,
I don't know what I was on when I came up with running a book club for my Masjid's youth group. So far I'm thinking it'll be ages 14-20ish and all female...which is unfortunate that the boys won't participate but whatever.
What should our first book be?

Re: Book Club!
You gotta give a reason why and why you think it's appropriate i.e. I won't have the Masjid auntis barreling towards me in their ferocious herd wanting to chew my ass out.

Re: Book Club!
assalamu alaykum
I would say...To Kill a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee. I don't know if it's in the curriculeum in Amerikya, but we read through it in the UK. It's a great book about racism, passing judgements etc...probably ideal for a masjid setting

Re: Book Club!
To Kill a Mocking Bird, Sherlock, and Tom are all already required reading here in the states.
Stephanie Meyer has three books out, soon to be four in August. They are really popular...but I don't want to read them because they are about Vampires and crap. I'm too realistic for that.

Re: Book Club!
Still required reading, which they should have read all of those in Middle School.
Thanks though.

Re: Book Club!
Something that isn't all generic, something we didn't all read in grade school.
I'd suggest what I have in mind, but with an all-female group Tom Clancy might not be a great draw.

Re: Book Club!
Hahaha yeah Tom Clancy is definitely a no go.
I'll probably choose one of these books: Book Club Girl
Of course I'll have to read it first to make sure it's appropriate.

Re: Book Club!
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Night
Cry, The Beloved Country
Beowulf (even girls can enjoy it)
Wuthering Heights
Snow Falling on Cedars (has sex)
Things Fall Apart
The Good Earth
In Cold Blood
A Simple Plan
Life of Pi
1984 (muslims will like this, you can talk about Bush)
you can also read the novels that are trendy with muslims these days... Kite Runner, the other book by the same author, Reading Lolita in Tehran, whatever
but since its a bunch of muslim girls and you want alot of them to show up and be really interested....

swamped with papers and haven't read a fiction book in awhile. As Mossad mentioned, Life of Pi would be a great one to start with. there's a lot to talk about, in terms of both plot and message. I haven't read A 1000 Splendid Suns yet but heard it was good (several of my friends read it and were raving about it).

Re: Book Club!
Oh, I thought this thread was about a book club for islamica.
14 year old makes me think of the book "If I Should Speak" by Umm Zakiyyah. It's an easy read and fairly entertaining. However, I doubt the older club members would find it as interesting since it's a pretty generic Muslim fiction , at least in my opinion.
