Couldn't agree more; it's criminal, the number of kids who see reading as a chore.

read by 2 or 3???? WHERE??? Kids are just starting to talk at that age. Most kids are lucky if they start reading at 4-5 and many children don't start reading until they start school.
My mom read me stories every night before I went to sleep, that's how I taught myself to read. I think I was around 4-5 years old. My mommy is Oh, and my mom had a full time job too. She had a full time job, did all the housework, and STILL read to us every night before bed.

Okay, 2-3 is too young and 7 is too late.
It's 4-5 when most kids start learning to read over here (in kindergarten) and they should have more or less perfected it by 6 when they're in Grade 1.

asslamaualaykum
i think it is too young but it is possible and i know of peopel who started reading that young. Maybe they're super clever. It's so cute when Esa reads, he's 8 though, but it still surprises m. Liek today when i was looking for a book in the shop and he was bringing me all the books and reading me the titles lol

Yeah, well the idea is that the child first imagines before he/she sees literally. It's worked on a lot of people, they seem to be able to read just as well when they're older. But like you, i wouldn't swerve that way, i had way too much fun reading books when i was really young, and i would like my kids to share that adventure and fantasy.

Bluestar - have you never had a TV or do you just not have one right now? I didn't have one throughout my time at university and I didn't actually miss it at all, and I'm thinking of doing the same with the bubba when he/she is born - get them in the habit of living without it early on.
|
I had it when i was growing up and then stopped since i was in uni. I hated it, and then stopped watching it because i thought the media always seemed patronising to the public and that annoyed me. I haven't had one for 3/4 years now. Don't miss it at all, i think it's because i like radio 4 so much

Re: Do you need to read books to be clever?
no, but you do need to read books to be knowledgeable.
of course, reading books, even prolifically, doesn't necessarily indicate erudition. and a moron reading a given book will usually have a totally different experience than an intelligent person reading the same book.
