local indian store owner uncle had that book behind his checkout counter down in texas.. i was like, wow, i've never seen healthy desi cook books and asked him if i could see it and before i could finish asking my question, he was like, 'beta...this is for white people...not people like us' and made a face. apparently south asian food is not 'too diet' 'health' friendly

tis true

In terms of lacking ghee and other sources of saturated fats, I'd have to agree. This book misses the mark (she uses vegetable oil instead of ghee, lower fat meats, etc).

But flavor-wise, with the spices and so on, I think the author got it right.

Wait... so it's not very healthy? Or not very Desi? Or what? I'm confused.

Well, it's more healthy than most desi food, which according to some people makes it less desi. However, I do think it's still quite yummy and authentic.

Amazon.com: Ultimate Bread: Books: Eric Treuille,Ursula Ferrigno

bread! this book is good; a large introductory section (with pictures and all) and a good number of recipes (again with the pictures). in my mind, cookbooks should always have pictures. i think it takes me back to when i was a kid and was "allowed" to read books with so many pictures. anyway, this one does and it's got real solid recipes as well as a description of each type of bread. it does give a (small, in my opinion) nod to middle eastern and south asian breads, but it does have the tendency to white-ify them, so i would avoid those or at least keep in mind that your mom probably makes better.
