Lightbulb Libraries

Anything about libraries goes here. How you love/hate them. How you want to be a librarian when you grow up and want to get your masters in Library Science. Pics of what your library looks like. Strange library experiences. etc all things libraries go here.

Queens has a great Public Library. I think its actually the biggest or second biggest in the entire country. I can get almost any brand new book within a few days (and old ones too, of course)... and its all free

by the way, whats a Masters in Library Science all about?

Yeah Queens is the largest in the US, but the Toronto Public Library system is even larger. I Interlibrary loan a lot of books and noticed most are from Queens.

The MLS is required to be a professional reference, children's, school (which requires a specialization since you teach as well), or subject specialist librarian (which requires another MA in that area, such as Law librarians who have a JD and MLS. Reference librarians in college libraries also need a second MA in anything else). The people behind the Circulation desk don't have a library degree, but reference and children's librarians usually do (unless they just have years of experience since you could be a great librarian without a degree). Library school classes are a mix of theory (history, methods of classification, purpose, new issues in the field, technology issues), courses on sources and reference books (where to find info since reference librarians could be asked questions on anything, and there are hundreds of reference books out there so we learned about them in class), some computer coding (every library has a techie person, and each book is catalogued according to a specific language used by libraries), literature (like children's and young adult lit and how to evaluate it, have programs with kids since libraries often become a temporary day care/community center after school).

Basically how to evaluate sources, how to organize info, incorporate changing technology into libraries (it's not just books anymore), and how to make it user friendly and make the library useful to the public and a place you want to be. and like you said, it's all free, so it's an amazing resource.

Default Re: Libraries

my library is rubbish, but its still my favourite place to be. They hardly ever have cool books in, and when they do I have to reserve them because someone else stole it.

I got a letter yesterday claiming I hadn't returned two books, when clearly I had. I was extremely enraged about this matter so I went promptly to the library, banged on the desk and demanded they sort this matter out immediately. (Ok, I asked them politely.) Turned out some lazy library staff didn't scan the book in properly. Do you think I could claim compensation for all the worry I was put through?

My library is full of romance novels for the women and crime for the men. They only have 2 copies of harry potter and the deathly hallows and the childrens library is filled with fantasy/sci fi books.

It was recently redecorated so it looks pretty cool, but i don't like the way books are arranged any more. Instead of alphabetical order they have a blasphemous "browsing" system where books are arranged in categories and then alphebetically by author. This disgusts me. Its like school with all its little "cliques".

Maybe I should ake pictures of my library. Its quite pretty. And a nice place to be. Apart from the fact it has a reputation. (its where all the desi girls and boys would hook up and make eyes at each other through the bookshelves.) Now its just filled with pervy men. I would like to work at the library. In fact I did. Voluntarily. For a long time. I would also like to own my own library. If my mother didn't insist on throwing all my books out, I probably would by now. As soon as my collection reaches over 30 my books are all thrown in the bin. This has happened at least 4 times. Its quite disheartening really. But enough about my own library. The next time I post in here shall be about Bolton Central Library.
Goodbye.

Libraries

The Metro Toronto Reference Library

At Bloor and Yonge--the intersection where
Toronto's two big arteries converge--
You'll find the Ref: a massive library,
of orangy complexion, six floors high,
with lots of study space and computers.
As every floor just runs along the edge
of this historic building, like some kind
of atrium, one never feels its packed.
It's big as one full city block. You can't,
however, borrow books--the "Reference"
component of the Ref.

Robarts Library

Just twenty minutes from the Ref by foot,
You'll find another massive edifice:
The U of T's huge Robarts Library.
It's big as one full city block. You can,
Indeed, take books out (with some rules, though, eh?).
It houses something like ten million tomes,
whose weight makes Robarts sink a bit each year.
Or so the legend goes....

Books

God, it is nice, that smell of a book,
Calls to mind childhood time overtook.
Meeting each soul, whoever has lived,
One at a time.

My uni library SUCKS. My city centre library also SUCKS.

there's hardly many books on religion. ( i take religious studies). there's a few at the uni library but some nerd takes out all the good ones probably like 6 weeks before the assignment due date so there's nothing left for the rest of us when we get there .

City centre library has 7 small shelves on religion books in the reference section. 5 of them are on Christianity (half of which are Bibles and old and new testaments ). then theres one shelf between Hinduism and Buddhism, and one between Islam and Judaism!
