omigosh you guys this book is soooooooo cool.
it talks about how
-american cotton farmers have always been protected from competing for the labor market
-the textile industries, how it develops countries and moves to the next country. it was interesting because it was comparing present day sweatshops to american textile mills back in the day. the author basically said that the anti-sweatshop activists AND the corporations are improving the conditions of the workers because the activists are demanding better conditions and the corporations are providing jobs that are better than anything else in the region. (pretty much makes you feel like you're off the hook for wearing clothing produced by 15-year-old girls who get paid 5 cents a day and only get 2 bathroom breaks in a 12 hour day)
-lobbies!
-how american protectionism actually helps other countries
with tarrifs/quotas, companies are forced to import from many different countries
many of the quotas were lifted in 2005 and China flooded the market, leaving the lil countries like Bangladesh joining forces with the American protectionism guys.
-the business of used clothing.
.......and im not done with it yet.
