We used to have a whole thread on Iqbal back in the day... back when Dream34 wasn't so busy with med school.
I'm reading Anita Diamant's "The Red Tent". I know... several years too late, but I got it off a friend just today. Especially relevant 'cause I'm reading the Pentateuch for my Five Books of Moses class. We're still on Genesis.
|
K, finished Red Tent. That's what I did today instead of reading for school and doing my assignments. I loved it. Well, the beginning at least, up until the middle even... ending was kind of disappointing. I was waiting for the catastrophe to come and when it came... oh boy. Crazy. Joseph is so bastardized though, it made me sad. I was like "This is NOT how it is in the Qur'an, okay?" But I guess that's the point.
K, got some Frithjof Schuon to read next and then... Shoba De.
And Gabriel Garcia Marqez. And I'm gonna read Fanon too. Ummm....after my assignments. My reading list is becoming a mile long.

I'm reading all of these on and off, I plan to finish them though.
Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama- interesting read so far, he talks about why he entered politics, how he became known, his views on all kinds of things, why you should vote for him. It's a easy read, snapshots of his experiences and thoughts. Some of it sounds corny but I like it, he sounds sensible and intelligent. I haven't seen his other book yet, that was written way back apparently.
Islam and the Destiny of Man- I'm somewhere in the middle. It's the kind of book I like to read after a long day, he's a great writer. just reading a page inspires me.
To Be a European Muslim- somewhere in the beginning. I want to skip to the second half but it said not to do that in the intro. I'll be good and stick to it, probably after I finish Gai Eaton.
Climbing the Mango Tree by Madhur Jaffrey- just started it and it's really interesting so far, it's her memoir. I've never even read her cookbooks.

Re: What Are You Reading?
'The Elegant Universe' by Brian Greene.
It's a book about physics, dealing with the theories of special relativity and quantum mechanics and the problem of trying to fit them under a single roof. It focuses on the idea of 'string theory' to do this.
It's not a text book, it's popular press (it's actually a pretty easy read) and almost every page has some fact that nearly bowls me over. He describes everything very conceptually using analogies that are easily digestible, so it's understandable if you're no good at math (like me). Definitely a must read if you're into sciency type stuff.

Re: What Are You Reading?
The Flamboya Tree by Clara Olink Kelly.
It seems like a biography of a girl who's family lived on an Indonesian Island and what they went through after the Japanese invaded during the Second World War.
I'm not usually a fan of biographies but it looks interesting. I've still got loads more to read on my bookshelf. I can't fit any more books on to it either so have to read through them and give them away

Yeh! It's good stuff. Maybe I'll revive my astronomy thread one of these days.
