Blooey, you would LOVE that book.

nice i'll keep a lookout for it. Douglas Adams's books are rarely sold in charity shops though unless it's The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. That seems to appear a lot

"To speak a language is to take on a world, a culture. The Antilles Negro who wants to be white will be the whiter as he gains greater mastery of the cultural tool that language is.
Rather more than a year ago in Lyon, I remember, in a lecture I had drawn a parallel between the Negro and European poetry, and a French acquaintance told me enthusiastically, 'At the bottom you are a white man.'
The fact that I had been able to investigate so interesting a problem through the white man's language gave me honorary citizenship"

That's because the Hitchhiker's books are his schtick. They'll always be around. But he did a few other books too. Last Chance to See was the one he was most proud of. It's about his search for endangered wildlife, it's very funny and deeply moving. But it's unfortunately also the hardest to find. I gave it to my sister, an aspiring zoologist, as a gift and had to order it special from Media Play.

Re: Thoughtful Quotes from Books
Some absolutely wonderful quotes on this..
the following one stuck out for me:
Quote:
I cannot help but wonder, however, if we do not invent our own destiny, design our own fate, to suit our circumstances. How much of love is a trick of the mind, a mere feat of verbal acrobatics, to accommodate persons who just happen to cross our path and who suit our needs at one particular moment in time?
-- Anita Shreve

heres my contribution:

"All the world's a stage And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages." As you like it, Shakespeare

Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.

found myself there

Haha, this is hilarious. It reminded my of that Amitabh bhachan song, '...ya ali ya ali, rehta hoon mein masjid wali gali...'
