San Diego sucks. Nice scenery, but a boring place. It's a lot cheaper than the Bay Area or LA, but if you want to buy a home, be prepared to shell out $$$.

I'd suggest the Midwest (Chicago 'burbs, Minneapolis area, Wisconsin), Phoenix, Atlanta 'burbs, or Dallas/Ft Worth burbs. Depends on what you like in terms of weather and culture. All of those places are spread out while still having culture & nice/decent metropolitan areas, traffic isn't TOO horrible (Phoenix is probably the worst on that list), and they all have a reasonable cost of living.
