Al-shafii was not praising the shia's in what he stated. He was simply pointing at the idiocy of those who called him a rafidi because he loved ahl ul bayt. But here is his views on the shia:
Imam Ash-Shafi'i:
"I have not seen among the heretics a people more famous for falsehood than the Raafidi* Shia."
and on another occasion he said;
"Narrate knowledge from everyone you meet except for the Raafidi* Shia, because they invent ahaadeeth and adopt them as part of their religion."
would this make al-shafi a 'wahabi'?
