My grandma is teaching herself to read Urdu (she never had the chance to be formally educated back in the pind).

She's very motivated. She recently learned to read Qur'anic Arabic too (recently as in a decade ago).

I was like "Bayji, forget Urdu. You need to learn to read English. You don't need Urdu in Canada and it's not like you're planning on going back to Pakistan to live, right?" And she was like "No, puttar... I need to learn to read Urdu." She wants to because there are certain Urdu words she encounters when reading religious texts.
