no there was no chechen war back then. The USSR gave weapons and other stuff to the Arabs but they mismanaged their middle east policy in some ways. The USA was smarter about it and picked better allies (namely, Israel and the Gulf kingdoms). In fact, the US turned what couldve been an international disaster with the 1973 war into a diplomatic master-stroke both for themselves and for the president of Egypt AND for the Israelis.
The US was just smarter and better than the USSR. Thats probably a big reason why "Israel defeats the Arabs" (which is not a true statement)
