Default Re: The Toronto Crew

The University of Toronto at Mississauga's Muslim Students Association cordially invites you to attend an event concerning the so-called "TORONTO 18". The media hysteria that surrounded the "Toronto 18" case was phenomenal. These men were not arrested in a normal fashion rather there was a cultural element – a thematic backdrop that lingered in the background as hundreds of police men arrested 18 individuals. The backdrop was presented in the form of images -- pictures of women in niqab (face veil) and hijab (head scarf), images of mosques and even symbols of God and Islam were behind the headlines of Terrorism – a tactic that is accepted widely and unfortunately without question. Together, government officials and the local media delved into the "fear factor" and Canadians became blinded to the injustice that took place right in front of their eyes. Not only has this perpetuated the assumption of guilt before a trial – but it has perpetuated the injustices that these young men and their families continue to face.

The upcoming event is meant to spread awareness and go beyond the biased image which the media has portrayed. It is also mean to highlight the injustices against these young men. The event will take place on January 16th 2008 at University of Toronto at Mississauga and will be from 7-9pm.
