Ok, I gotcha now.

Now I need a new bike since the old one got nicked. I was hesitant to buy until I could settle this power and knee pain issue.

I ride frequently but not long distances in urban areas with a few mild inclines. I need something cheap and cheerful. What type shall I go for?
