Don't get me wrong - I don't intend on living in a house like that unless there's enough people / kids to fill it up with cheer and liveliness

Yea. Welcome to the club.

Usually in houses like that you have enough family / great / living rooms to accomodate friends or business associates at very short notice, without disturbing family. And in any case, I'd always expect my friends to call anyways, before they came - its the equivalent of knocking thrice on your door and waiting for permission to enter.
