Default Re: which Cool people you have chilled with

mostly brother Magid although i hang more with his kids and wife because he's always traveling, and i hate to bother him much at the masjid (there's always someone else who seems to want to talk to him more). a few years ago we managed to bring him all the way to virginia tech (to talk about marriage, of course) and we kept him up 'til about 3am at our masjid i felt pretty bad about that. imam magid is great for the topic of marriage (watch out, because he will try and arrange something for you) but a less known fact is that he's even better for Seerah- he loooooves talking about the life of Muhammad (S) and he's like a veritable textbook; it's amazing to listen to and just wonder at his enthusiasm.

altaf husain? again, mostly hang with his kids and wife, but he's always up for discussion, which is nice for those times i have to call people frantically for advice/speakers. he's always cracking jokes- give him an audience and he won't stop until his time is up (with the jokes).

imam johari abdul-malik's cool; he can go forever! he's got jokes, too.

sheikha zainab alwani is one of the sweetest people i know. she was my qur'an teacher for a year, and that was my favorite year in all the year's i've had qur'an teachers. she's nothing but positive encouragement and she's so unassuming in her knowledge (but she knows a loooot). her husband is even sweeter, if that's possible.

i think the thing i love the most about truly knowledgeable people is that they never seem to use negative ideas/speech/manners to get their points across- very little sarcasm, always looking to the positive side of things, and constantly encouraging good in others. i've heard lots of information from laymen like myself but the reception is palpably different than that received from really impressive sources. i think knowledge is a trust, and i'm not just going to take it from any old joe (though i'll definitely hear them out and consider what they say). i don't think knowledge should be for the elite few, but when you have those who really maintain a high level of trust with less knowledgeable people, they deserve serious respect. there are lots of other knowledgeable people i respect, but the ones above are a few that i know personally.
