Kids start high school when they're 15 mostly. And one or two years isn't a 'longtime' anything.
And I know kids may have like 'little kid' boyfriends and girlfriends when they're 9 or 10, but they're nothing serious. Nothing that could have been included in this particular pair's 'longterm' relationship.
