Don't make a big deal about it, just a casual "hey Joe, I've got a little time -- need a hand with anything?". If no one bites, then ask your boss if there's anything that needs to get done -- and grit your teeth and do it, no matter how trivial the task. Showing that you're willing to work and reliable will eventually lead to greater responsibility. And do it with a smile. Being pleasant helps...a lot.

Of course, this is from a closet gunner/workaholic. I did pretty well for myself though.
