They're not allowed in the race I've signed up for. I use them in training though.

I run 3 times a week and do the elliptical plus some weights for 2 or 3 days and take one rest day. I don't run on consecutive days though.

If you haven't run a race before, find one around you and sign up. There are usually a bunch of 5 and 10ks around. I've run a few and it's nice just to get an idea of how things work.
