I must say I have to agree
"First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me."
Pastor Martin Niemöller
and of course your intentions behind inactivity isn't because of belonging or sympathizing, but in the end educated inactivity is the plight of the Ummah.
We must be concerned if the light of our world, educational intuitions, carry such a blight. School is the future and if we stay slient we are concurring with it. Ever read "Silent No More"? well, one of the major points in the book is that the average American does not see religious Muslim leaders condemn violence so they get a feeling that in Islam it must agree on violence. (Later the author admits that the major media outlets does not cover such stories--but that is a different tangent).
Yes, there is freedom of speech, however when you abuse others your crossing the lines of the freedom and it's no longer a valid excuse. The same way yelling "Fire" is against the law--because it is INFLAMMATORY and thus it could led to hurting others.
Yes, protest might be "dead" and "over-done" but when a politician sees the strength of feeling behind a certain issue he thinks of votes and his desire to stay in office. And when I mean protest I do not mean only picketers--(however, they are included too)--but I mean the high school MSA's that protest in their own way by handing out flyers and doing dawah. And what a great opportunity for Dawah it is!!--we should be open and seize the moment--too often others are intimidated to approach us Muslims and try to understand us.
This mushkiL7a is a great ice-breaker.
