Srinagar: Murder charges have been filed against an Army Major and a Subedar after a teacher was killed in firing at Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

“We got to know at about 11 that the teacher has been killed in firing. We went there with our team. We have registered a murder case under section 203,” said SSP Kupwara, Vijay Kumar.

Eighteen persons have been injured as protests raged in the border town over the incident, which happened on Friday evening. A mob set fire to vehicles and refused to bury the body till an FIR was registered against the soldiers.

The security forces resorted to lathicharge when protesters tried to block Kupwara-Srinagar highway.

The teacher, Abdul Rashid Mir was killed near the Chowkibal post after having an argument with soldiers.

An army spokesman said the firing was accidental. The Army is also conducting an inquiry.
