well oak lawn isnt like the city of chicago, its a lilly white suburb just a few miles south of the chicago city limits. so there really isnt much diversity there. and usually these sort of problems have been occuring in these lilly white suburbs versus the city, were we have plenty of political muscle and power in the mayor's office and with some pretty powerful city alderman's on the city council. in the suburbs things are waaay different.
i think the issue has to do with the fact that religion has to be seperate from the schools, since its a government institution and the constitution states that there must be seperation of church and state. i think the way to get around that is with displays of the moon and the star, which is not religious in nature, but simply symbols often associated with islam. the cross, or the menora, for example are religious symbols since they are considered holy by christians and jews. the crescent moon and star is not considered holy by muslims and simply is just a symbol used for identification only. another thing would be, that they can serve iftar without invoking anything religious to it, simply serve the meal around sunset and whowever chooses to start eating right away, or wait till sunset is a personal option without invoking anything religious outloud. that way you are not violating the constitution of the united states.
