I did not have problems using PayPal for years either. It was only when I sold a really expensive item, the buyer 'reversed' the payment and PayPal 'froze' my money. After researching, the same buyer (scammer) was pulling the same scam on many other genuine sellers. I and others informed PayPal of this user, however they still authorised the reversal and took my money in the order of £500 or $1000.
I found many many cases such as mine on the internet, and PayPal seems to not bother much about taking money from the genuine seller insted of carrying out a real investigation and rejecting these money reversals from these known scammers.
I have just closed my PayPal account parmanently today and never see myself going back with them. I would still say for small transactions, such as a used jacket, chances of scams are very low on PayPal, HOWEVER: one advise for all would be not let your funds build up in your PayPal account. Withdraw it immediately when it reaches any amount not worth losing! If PayPal have hold of your money, they could simply freeze it indeffinately without giving you any reasons as to why (I have read cases of this). If you withdraw it, they cant do anything to your money.
All seems jolly with PayPal as it was with me. I never immagined PayPal would turn into such a nightmare all of a sudden. As a lot of people who have been ill-treated and scammed by PayPal will say, you will never think something can go wrong until it does with PayPal, then you're on your own.
