I highly doubt the Americans possess the yaani, how you say balls to attempt anything serious within the Pakistani border. Pakistan Isn't like Afghanistan or Iraq It has a proper organised army.. one of the strongest ones in the region. Not to mention its strong relations with China as well.
I think you overestimate the Pakistani army. They barely defeated India in its last serious military engagement - and the Indian army got its but kicked by the Chinese which aren't exactly a first class military.

Also, I don't see how land forces can deal with the overwhelming air superiority of the American air force.

If Pakistan got involved into a serious military conflagration with the US, it would get bombed back into the stone age. Moreover, the US would probably use India or Afghanistan to send in ground forces. Pakistan's neighbors would take advantage of the situation to reorganize the country along their interests (Afghanistan in the Pathan areas and India in Kashmir).

The only notable ally of Pakistan is China and I don't think the Chinese are at the stage where there willing to face off with America at this point.

My personal opinion is that America is intentionally trying to cause state fragmentation in Pakistan in order to clear up India's western border so that it can focus on engaging in China. The war on terror is probably nothing more than a guise for America to re-organize the world as it sees fit in order to contain Russia, China, India, and Europe.
