Turkey's secular elite fears that lifting the head scarf ban will have a snowball effect — putting pressure on women to wear ever more conservative attire and opening new avenues for the government to impose Islam on public and private life.

This is the biggest pile of rubbish I have ever heard. Isn't there a very basic difference between PERMITTING and IMPOSING? If the Turkish 'secular elite' are so worried about 'imposing Islam on public and private life', then what are they doing if not 'imposing *secularism* on public and private life'? They're still telling people how to dress, interefering with their civil liberties, so WHAT is the difference between their regime and Saudi?
Ooh, ooh, here's a thought. Why not let everyone wear whatever the heck they want? huh? Wow, what an unusual thought. How about we let people DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES? Oh, goodness, that's a bit of a radical idea. I don't know if the country could handle that. Maybe the sky will cave in and eradicate all stupidity from this planet and then we wouldn't have to deal with 'elites' talking out of their backsides.
