I was brought up like that too.

Surely it has some basis?

I just know we never opened our fast with anything cooked.

Would be nice to see some daleel.

Try to stick with the Sunnah though of doing it with a date. There's also some scientific evidence I believe to back up the benefits of doing it with a date.
