It's what makes you male of female. See, your sex is determined by your chromosomes. So, two X make you female, and and XY mix make you male. This is important becuase XY and XX have different abilities. XY inseminate XX and then XX deliver the baby. So our species has two major splits, the male (ineminating) XY sex, and the female (inseminated carry the young) XX sex. There are creatures who reproduce asexually, meaning they don't have a defines biological sex, but humans are not that kind of creature.
