I wasn't brought up in a Muslim house but many people have told me(including scholars) that the Patriarch is the Mufti of the household. I took it mean that they pass down the knowledge.
hmm.... but how often does that actually happen? Think about it, if the man is outside the home earning all day, and only has a few hours each night to spend with the kids, how much of an opportunity does he actually have to pass down knowledge compared with a woman in a traditional setup? I think the reality is more like: the husband is responsible to make sure the children learn, be it through school, or by directing the wife to teach them/educating the wife.
