If he only did it the one time, is there a way to give him the benefit of the doubt? What if he was an ignoramous and didn't know how offensive what he said was? If he said he was joking when confronted, maybe he realized, repented, and won't do it again? You can repent of acts of kufr, can't you?
Of course, if he continues to do it, that puts it in a whole different category.
