OK, so you know one step: planning.
Let's see, I graduated from college, did a graduate degree, worked in a corporate office, got into med school, got through two years of intense basic science education, did another two years of intense patient care education (where I performed excellently, alhamdulillah), and ended up in the top third of my class with board scores in the top 10-20% nationwide. I was one of the top 3-5 students in my year to apply for my specialty, and I planned my residency application process very diligently. All processes which require significant planning capability, I'm sure you'll agree. However, I still didn't match into a spot and had to scramble for a temporary spot. I'm currently two weeks into a residency at a place I love, and I'm already laying out plans for a research project and for finding a permanent position (here if possible).
So not only have I learned about
how to plan for the future, I've learned that even the best laid plans by the most competent people can go awry. Additionally, I've learned how to work around those unexpected setbacks with substantial backup plans. That was the advice I was imparting to Jaysh.
