You've actually simplified it wonderfully into a nutshell. It's only complicated when peoples expectations affect reality and they make it hard for everybody.
Another reason is the lack of trust that people have that Allah will provide for us if we work hard. (they say well you gotta tie your camel first and then trust in Allah afterwards....the thing is that they spend the rest of their lives tying their camel and the part about trusting in Allah never seems to come).

The possibility of poverty and under achieving scares alot of people
