Anyways, if you read the original question it talks about something the Sahaba did as well (but was condemned?), but it has nothing do with duaa or surah reciting groups,or Quran Khani's. Its just dhikr that is kept track through beads or tossing shells onto a pile.

However, the situation my friend is in is that a New Masjid opened in her area, and the Imam is holding a Khatam-e-Khajgani for blessings or something.
