In the middle I tried this new download thing, make the startbar menu to look like Windows Vista. After I removed it, the sound control icon disappeared from my taskbar. Not sure if it was because of that though.
I've even gone to the control panel and checked the box which says 'Place volume icon in task bar', but it doesn't work. My Windows is XP.

My sound icon wasn't showing in the taskbar either, so I did the following and it appeared again. Go to the control panel and
untick the
'Place volume icon in the taskbar' box. Then click on 'Apply'. Now tick the same box once again and click on 'Apply'. The icon should appear again.
