Congrats on the apartment
To save money:
- Buy most of your food and other household items in bulks on a weekly or monthly basis. Then set a budget for things like veggies, fruits, etc that you can buy every couple of days. Try to stick to the budget. Cook as much as you can instead of eating out.
- If you buy furniture from thrift stores or flea markets, you can give them a makeover by staining or painting them. Make sure you sand the furniture and use a primer before you stain or paint though. You can also reupholster any furniture with fabric from discount stores, and a staple gun.
- If you know how to sew or know someone who sews, you can make your own window treatments, throw pillow covers, bed linens, table linens, etc. It's very cost effective, and you can get as creative as you want. Look for unconventional ways of using fabric you find, and you can make unique stuff.
Good luck
