Chart 2:



This chart is a little more complicated. I think the easiest way to describe this one is by imagining "information" (usually about Charlie's death) as moving back in time (dotted green line). Some of you may wish to reverse this and instead view Desmond's consciousness travelling forward in time for just a moment. The result is the same.

So, let's look at the "main timeline" (dark green). If Desmond had not received his first vision, Charlie would have been struck by lightning (pink square 1). The timeline then would have continued with Charlie of course being dead the whole time. Instead, information was sent back in time (or Des' mind jumped forward, then back) and Desmond was able to prevent a Charlie barbeque. These alternate actions created the first red-line of alternate events.

Now let's imagine the Desmond didn't get any more visions. The universe would have slowly course-corrected (purple line) and made certain that future events happened the way they were supposed to. Charlie has to die (pink square 2) before any events can play out the way they're supposed to (since he is dead in the main timeline). So he would have died and the universe is eventually fixed.

Unfortunately, Desmond saw that second death (drowning I believe) and he acted on it again. This created an alternate version of events before the first alternate could even fix itself (second red line). Now, if Desmond had let that timeline play out, the universe would have killed Charlie again, by making him fall on the rocks (pink square 3).

I think you see the pattern by now, every time the universe makes a plan to correct the timeline, Desmond catches wind of it and creates an alternate set of events. Pink square 4 is where Charlie would have been shot in the neck with an arrow. And pink square 5 is where Des and Charlie stopped running from Fate and Charlie let himself die. Eventually, the universe will even itself out now and get back to the main timeline, but whether we've reached that point already is debatable. I don't think we have.
