I don't think it was a very 'fast' u-turn. Rather, I have been debating this topic with brother Abuz Z for over a year, and he has slowly been convincing me. I read a fatwa many months ago from Shaykh Salman al-Oudah, which was what put the thought in my mind. Then I listened to one lecture by Shaykh Haitham Hamdan which was an entire series on Hijrah. Then I listened to two separate lectures by Shaykh Yassir Qadhi, which were on this very topic. These lectures went in quite a bit of detail, explaining why the classical opinion on the matter no longer applies.

So this was a slow process that took over a year. But I guess you can say that a year is very fast; I guess it is subjective what you consider fast and what you consider slow.
