My parents would always change the channel whenever that story came on, but I do remember he had a boat he named Monkey Business. I also remember the hijackings. That was definitely the crime du jour back then. And I remember the PIA hijacking, but there was also a Pan Am hijacking in Karachi, which I remember a friend was on. She came back with stories of dead people next to her and blood everywhere.
Music wise, for a girl like me, Whitney Houston was the biggest thing. "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" was incredibly popular. And so were the Bangles "Walk Like an Egyptian." And the biggest movie for me was "Three Men and a Baby." Awww...

haha i remember all that too. your right there was a pan am hijacking in pakistan as well, i completely forgot about that. and i still remember the bangles. there was a rumor going around (well it was by my older sisters) that the lead singer of the bangles as actually half indian/desi??? i dont know if this is true or not. but ya walk like an egyptian was the biggest hit at the time and i had an english teacher in 7th grade, mrs. ZAKI. yes her last name was zaki and she would always talk about the song, cuz her husband was egyptian lol and she was white. unfortunantly i heard many years ago that mrs. zaki had died.
but ya i remember gary hart and all those scandals lol with donna rice, and of course the PTL! lol. and jimmy farwell. Plus that same year not only did 21 jump street premier on fox, i dunno if you used to watch that or not, but so did married with children aka al bundy lol. but they still show some of these old tv shows on tv. i was shocked. i started watching 21 jump street again daam that was a good show. it was waay ahead of its time. i even saw episodes that i still remember after so many years. music wise, i remember kool moe dee, "Wild Wild West', Young M.C. "bust a move" (well i think that was more like 89') and the beasty boyz. i cant believe they are still around.
and of course who could forget khomenie??? i remember seeing his picture on front cover of TIME magazine, and the headline read "Iran vs the world" and here we are still talking about Iran 20 year's after khomenie died. Heck even his son died too!
but i never forgot that muhammad ali concert i had to attend with my family as a kid, back in 87'. I think it was 87', im pretty sure it was then. because we went with my dad's freind from work, and his wife, who was pakistani themselves. i remember this, cuz we had these seats high up in balcony of the medina shriner's (temple) in downtown chicago. Then waay down in the audience, we had spotted another family freind of my parents. She was there with one of her girlfreinds, who was pakistani too. This was more than 20 years ago. and it was her daughter who i foolishly proposed too. im writing this because she has no idea really just how far back we all go, and how much I do remember, even if she has virtually no memory of any of this at all. and this was all part of the reason why i did what i did.
