No one (well, almost no one) automatically fattens up after childbirth, as if they can't control it. As a matter of fact, you can lose a pound a week breastfeeding if you keep your food intake normal. Your metabolism changes with age and events like childbirth, but it's up to you to make the necessary changes to adjust for that. That's the trick--if you are eating the same as before, but you're putting the pounds on, examine your diet and reduce your caloric intake because it's obvious you don't NEED as much as you're eating. Also, it helps to eat quality foods. You can't whine "I only had a tiny sliver of pie!" That sliver of pie has as many calories as five bowlfuls of salad. You're better off eating one bowl of salad--it has bulk, but it's low in calories. Unlike the pie, which is small, but jampacked with calories that will make you fat.
