I don't think the previous demolishing of the giant Buddha statues at Bamyan holds any religious significance. It was purely to make a political statement.

Afghanistan has been a Muslim country for hundreds of years, and no one touched the statues. Same goes for the Pyramids, and all the amazing Hindu temples in India. Egpyt and the Indian subcontinent have been Muslim for centuries. If it had been a religious obligation, it's reasonable to assume that our predecessors in these areas would have destroyed these structures, but they didn't. I think that speaks volumes.
