and yes it is silly, we all share the air we breathe, have the same necessities, feel the same emotions. Whether you acknowledge it or not, we are the same people.
You're distantly related to a lot of people who may not be muslims in the world. Religion brings similar people together, it does not make the different people less human.

Muslims should have respect and compassion for others as you have said we're the same people. If one of us saw someone randomly in need of urgent help would we think that oh if this person is Muslim only then I would help them?? I hope not. If we want others in the world to respect us we have to change this mentality.
I may be distantly related to non-Muslims. I recently found out that I have some although a small amount of Brit blood from my mom side. Never knew about it my whole life but it makes you realise the whole 6 degrees of separation. (if I said that correctly)
