Boycotting the gas company wouldn't really do anything, it's the price of oil. It's because OPEC is a cartel who decides how much oil they will sell and what they will sell it for, regardless of supply. In the US, this would be illegal but OPEC isn't really based out of the US, so they aren't susceptible to our laws.

The gas companies just buy the oil from them and refine it into gasoline.

It may help a bit if we start drilling in Alaska like Bush is talking about now, but there are already US territories that drill oil. That's more like "Well, they're selling it for this much, we should charge it so we can make that kind of cash too."

McCaine was talking about waiving the Federal gasoline tax for the summer, which is 18.4 cents/gallon. That's a decent start but of course the government would make up for those losses by hiking something else up, then not bringing it back down after the summer.
