Men can't let women win. The natural thing to do is to change the statement so it looks like you were never arguing in the first place. That way the man, even if he was incorrect, still can't lose. It even weirder when the woman wasn't trying to argue with the man in the first place. No matter how much she tries to do the other (I wasn't arguing with you) she will still lose.
