Life is like, maybe 10% about the hand you've been dealt. The rest 90% is about how you react and deal with that 10%. Everyone in this world has it that way, everyone.

So keep doing it until you get better at it.

I'm pretty good at reading and writing but I wasn't born with it. I'm pretty good at various types of artistic expression, but I wasn't born with these talents. Ever since I was a kid I had to work at them to develop them further and further.

Case in point - for most of my life up until the age of 20 I was very introverted and quiet, I kept to my own circle of friends and would never know how to break the ice at any party. When I was in college and university, one of my co-op jobs was selling newspapers for the Globe & Mail from a call-center.

I couldn't sell for beans.

I took the job because time was running out - there was a deadline for the co-op students to get a job for the semester. I sat in that cubicle and just kept working at it, learning from others, trying new methods, silently kinda hating it but just doing what I had to do for a paycheck. At the same time I remembered what Prophet Muhammad said "When you do anything, do it with ihsaan (excellence)..." - so I just kept at it, kept working my way up and getting better at what I do.

And now I'm really good at it, very comfortable at it. President's Club, trips, major prizes, big bonuses, yada yada yada.

Amazing.

I'm annoyed though because everytime I try to achieve something, I fall back down. For example I never really thought about trying to be ace at something until I was 15/16, and back then I tried to do all those things I would love to be good at like write/practice art etc.. I come from a very artistic family, and I seem to be the only one that doesn't have it in me. I'm also a pessimist, and I grew up around people telling me that I'm not good enough all the time. The worst part is I haven't been able to prove them wrong yet.

Put short, I've just sort of given up on trying to be good at something. I never did try to be something I'm not anyway.

Talent (or skill) = cool.
