I think you have to be willing to make the personal sacrifices the lifestyle calls for, be willing to risk work environments that are frequently quite hostile to you as a resident (especially in your early years), and most importantly be willing to let all the nonsense roll off your shoulders for the sake of doing something you love.
It sounds a bit melodramatic, perhaps, but from what I've seen that's basically what you've got to be prepared for.

its tough but inshallah not too tough. You just have to like being in the OR
at this point i'm pretty much committed, but I'm happy with the choice so far. Most of the surgery interns at our program are actually pretty happy. I think alot of the talk about how insane it is tends to be exaggerated, like the way people told me med school was going to be hell on earth but it really wasnt so bad. I just have to find a place that the residents like (inshallah again)
