It's a rough life, and I've had my share of classmates who were completely gung-ho about gensurg -- until they did a sub-I in it.
I think you have to be willing to make the personal sacrifices the lifestyle calls for, be willing to risk work environments that are frequently quite hostile to you as a resident (especially in your early years), and most importantly be willing to let all the nonsense roll off your shoulders for the sake of doing something you love.
It sounds a bit melodramatic, perhaps, but from what I've seen that's basically what you've got to be prepared for.
